Risan, the oldest city in Boka Bay, was established in the 3rd century BC by the Illyrian tribe Risoniti, from which it derived its original name—Risinium.Risan offers a rich Mediterranean atmosphere, nestled among the Dinaric mountains. The town is ideal for a holiday, featuring narrow, stone-paved alleyways, the medieval Gabel Street, 18th-century mansions, the Church of St. Peter and Paul (1601), and the captivating Sopot waterfall. Dobrota is located just 17 kilometers away from the enchanting town of Kotor. While Risan shares some characteristics with other Boka Bay towns, it retains its own unique and authentic identity.The Carina archaeological site above the city contains the remains of an ancient Illyrian town from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. On the Gradina hill, there are remnants of fortifications from an Illyric-Greek acropolis. Archaeologists found treasures at the Gradina site linked to the Illyrian Queen Teuta, who took refuge there in 229 BC during the Roman legions’ attack. Legend has it that Queen Teuta jumped into an underground river waterfall with her treasure, which has never been discovered.
