Herceg Novi is known for its plentiful mimosa trees and its many flights of stairs. Often called the “City of the Sun” due to its abundance of sunny days throughout the year, it boasts a vibrant, sun-drenched atmosphere.The heart of Herceg Novi is its Old Town (Stari Grad), featuring architecture from different historical periods such as Sahat-Kula (1667) and Kanli-Kula (1483). Notable landmarks also include Fortress Spanjola (1538) and Fortress Forte Mare (1687), reflecting the town’s rich cultural heritage.Lush with greenery, Herceg Novi is home to a variety of tropical flowers. The town is infused with the subtle fragrance of yellow and green mimosas in late January, celebrated with the Mimosa Festival (Praznik Mimosa). Throughout the summer, various festivals further enhance the town’s tourist appeal.Herceg Novi’s tourism history dates back to the 19th century. The tavern of Sjora Roza and the café “Bella Vista” were popular spots during this period. The Hungarian nobleman Antal Magyar from Budapest is credited with pioneering modern hotel management along the Montenegrin coast when he built the “Boarding house on the green beach” in Zelenika in 1902, which later became Hotel Plaza in Zelenika.The town enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and mild winters. In summer (July and August), Herceg Novi averages around 10.7 hours of sunlight per day. The sea temperature ranges from 22 to 26 °C, matching the daily air temperature, allowing for a swimming season that lasts up to five months.
